Why Jacksonville gutters have a different job

Jacksonville gets about 52 inches of rain a year, and most of it lands between June and September in afternoon storms that can put down an inch or two in an hour. Add hurricane season, which peaks in September right when the ground is already saturated, and a gutter here gets tested harder in one summer than a gutter in Ohio does in three.

The ground is the second thing. Almost all of Duval County sits on sand. Sand does not heave like clay, but it washes. A roof edge with no gutter drops a curtain of water onto the same 12-inch strip of ground 60 or 70 times a summer, and that strip erodes. You see it as a gully in the mulch, mud on the stem wall, plants dying on the drip line, and eventually a slab edge with nothing under it. That is why the biggest part of our work is not fixing gutters. It is putting them on homes that never had them.

The third thing is the trees. Jacksonville is a pine city. Slash pine and longleaf pine drop needles most of the year, with a heavy fall in October and November, and pine straw is the single worst thing that can go into a gutter. It slides past every cheap guard, mats into a wet plug at the downspout outlet, and holds water against the seams until they fail. Most of the sagging runs and rotted fascia we see in Mandarin, Argyle Forest and the Southside started as a pine-needle clog nobody cleared.
